Today’s Dietitian
Vol. 28 No. 5 P. 4

I’m happy to formally introduce myself as the new editor of Today’s Dietitian. While I’ve officially been in this role since June, the July/August issue was outgoing editor Heather Davis’ opportunity to say her goodbyes. I’m no stranger to Today’s Dietitian—I’ve been writing regularly for the magazine since 2015—and I’ve spoken at a few Spring Symposiums and presented a few webinars.

As a second-career dietitian and first-career journalist (University of Oregon for journalism and University of Washington for nutrition), I often say that my career as a journalist became so much richer when I was able to write about what really lights my fire—nutrition, food, health, and wellbeing. I’ve been writing a nutrition column for The Seattle Times since 2012, and I currently have a private practice specializing in eating disorder recovery. Another thing I often say is that my writing, and the research I do for it, helps inform my work with clients, and my work with clients informs my writing.

On that note, I look forward to continuing Today’s Dietitian’s legacy of providing insightful, evidence-based articles with practical information you can take to work immediately, whether that’s in individual or group settings, or as a communicator in print or digital spaces.

In this issue, Today’s Dietitian’s cover story, “Savoring San Antonio” will help you plan where to eat if you’re attending FNCE® in October. Also in this issue, we have a feature article that takes a deep dive into nutrition support for recovery from traumatic brain injury—something experienced at higher rates in athletes, first responders, law enforcement, and the military—and another, on metabolic psychiatry, that explores the potential benefits of the ketogenic diet to help treat mental illness. We also have a culinary sports nutrition feature that offers a play-by-play guide for dietitians interested in developing cooking classes for student athletes.

When I’m not counseling clients, working to meet a writing deadline, or falling down a research rabbit hole on PubMed, I’m a voracious reader and gardener. (Regarding the latter, I’m a certified Master Gardener, president of my garden club, volunteer manager of my community garden, and committed creator/caretaker of my bird- and pollinator-friendly home garden in the Pacific Northwest). I also love to travel (current favorite: Vietnam), but never during gardening season!

If you’ll be attending FNCE® in San Antonio, look for me at the Today’s Dietitian booth in the Expo hall and say “Hi.” I’m happy to chat about the magazine, nutrition, gardening, or that great book you just read.
