When clients can have lots of fun while engaging in physical activity, they’re more likely to stick with it and meet health and weight management goals—and avoid chronic disease.

In this month’s E-News Exclusive, Today’s Dietitian (TD) has exciting news about a fun cardio dance workout that’s becoming well known in the fitness industry. The workout is patterned after a variety of popular ballroom dance moves that could inspire clients to begin or continue their exercise routines. The workout was developed by one of the professional celebrity dancers from the hit TV show Dancing With the Stars.

Exercising Can Be a Blast

Fans of the celebrity dance competition TV show Dancing With the Stars (DWTS) now can do more than just tap their toes to the beat of the music during the show. They can learn basic ballroom dance moves and get in shape with LaBlast Fitness classes or DVDs. Introduced by DWTS professional dancer and choreographer Louis van Amstel, LaBlast is a fun cardio dance workout that modifies popular ballroom dance movements, such as the rumba, salsa, lindy hop, foxtrot, and waltz, to be performed in a group fitness setting—no partner required.

According to van Amstel, LaBlast is designed to accommodate all fitness and dance experience levels, and participants can move at their own pace. Like other dance-based fitness classes (eg, Zumba), movements are choreographed to music, with each song having a set pattern. Unlike Zumba, which typically limits instructors to Latin-based music and dance styles, LaBlast enables instructors to choose music from any genre and incorporate many different dance styles, which include 14 different ballroom dance steps in 75 interchangeable movement patterns.

Healthful Food Prescriptions Could Save Lives and Money

Healthful food prescriptions through Medicare and Medicaid could generate substantial health gains and be highly cost-effective, according to a study published in the open-access journal PLOS Medicine by Yujin Lee, PhD, and Dariush Mozaffarian, MD, DrPh, of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in Boston, and colleagues. As noted by the authors, the findings support the implementation and evaluation of such programs within private and public health care systems.

In nearly all nations, health care spending continues to increase dramatically, with diet-related diseases being a major driver. Economic incentives through health insurance may promote more healthful behaviors, but little is known about the health and economic impacts of incentivizing diet, a leading risk factor for diabetes and CVD, through Medicare and Medicaid. Fruit, vegetable, and other produce prescriptions recently have been funded in the United States through the Farm Bill with pilot programs. However, the health impacts, costs, and cost-effectiveness of the programs haven’t been evaluated at scale.

Hosting Gluten-Free Guests for Easter

For many families, Easter is a special time to come together and attend religious services, hide eggs for the kids, craft Easter baskets—and, like most other holidays, to enjoy a delicious meal and treats. Large family meals typically are a challenge in and of themselves for those hosting them, but that difficulty is compounded when guests have celiac disease or nonceliac gluten sensitivity and must eat gluten-free foods.

In all likelihood, at least one client will approach you feeling overwhelmed about preparing gluten-free menu items for their Easter guests. Luckily for your clients (and their guests), there’s no need for them to panic; as an RD, you can reassure them that making simple modifications to meals they already have planned can make it easier than they think.
