Common Athletic Injury

One of the most common injuries among athletic clients is stress fracture. Years ago when I worked at Rodale Inc and would run six to eight miles per week (yeah, those were the days), I’d hear about these types of injuries among fellow runners and read about them in Runner’s World magazine. I hoped I’d never develop a stress fracture, and I never did. I heard they were painful, and, of course, prevented you from jogging until they healed.

In this month’s E-News Exclusive, Today’s Dietitian (TD) discusses what stress fractures are, how to prevent them through proper nutrition and training modification, and ways sports dietitians can counsel athletic clients.

Strategies for Preventing Stress Fractures in Sports

Stress fractures are common sports injuries that hurt an athlete physically and mentally. In addition to hampering their training program, a situation that could lead to detraining, a variety of emotions can come into play as the athlete sits on the sidelines. Yet sports dietitians can help their clients take steps toward prevention through proper nutrition and facilitate physical and emotional recovery after a stress fracture has occurred.

Stress Fractures Defined and Risk Factors
Stress fractures are tiny cracks in bones resulting from overuse.1 “Rapid increases in the frequency, volume, or intensity of repetitive impact activities, like running or jumping, lead to an accumulation of bony microtrauma that may manifest as a stress fracture if the athlete is overtrained or lacks ample recuperation stimuli,” says Michael Roncarati, PT, DPT, CSCS, director of rehabilitation for the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association. Muscles help dissipate ground reaction forces upon impact and therefore, “overtraining can lead to muscle fatigue to the point where bones will be subjected to bear a greater brunt of the impact,” Roncarati says.

Consumers Willing to Pay More for ‘All-Natural’ Labeled Foods

A study published in the Journal of Food Science found that expectations of product quality, nutritional content, and the amount of money consumers were willing to pay increased when consumers saw a product labeled “all natural” as compared with the same product without the label.

Researchers at The Ohio State University used virtual reality technology to simulate a grocery store taste-test of peanut butter. In one condition, consumers were asked by a server to evaluate identical products, with only one being labeled “all natural.” In the other, the server additionally emphasized the all-natural status of the one sample.
