Mayo Clinic Diet Makeover

The Mayo Clinic Diet, which has been around for more than 70 years and is almost always ranked as one of the top or the top diet program, has gotten a makeover. The Mayo Clinic has expanded the diet (ie, introducing vegetarian, Mediterranean, high-protein, and healthy keto options) and introduced a digital wellness platform to enable people to track their progress. Sort of bringing the diet into the 21st century—so to speak.

In this month’s E-News Exclusive, Today’s Dietitian (TD) goes into detail about the Mayo Clinic Diet updates so you can share them with clients who are interested in following the eating pattern.

Tried and True Mayo Clinic Diet Undergoes Change

Every year, U.S. News & World Report magazine evaluates and ranks the best diets and diet programs, and each year the Mayo Clinic Diet has been in the top tier. In the latest review, the Mayo Clinic Diet was rated #1 Best Diet Program, tied with WW (formerly known as Weight Watchers). The Mayo Clinic Diet was first published in 1949 by the Mayo Clinic Committee on Dietetics as the Mayo Clinic Diet Manual. It was most recently updated in December 2021, with the help of a medical team of weight loss experts, to accommodate new research and offer a host of new online tools that make planning and tracking clients’ diet and physical activity easier long term.

“We designed the Mayo Clinic Diet based on scientific evidence so that it’s safe and effective for weight loss, as well as being practical, enjoyable, and sustainable over time,” says Donald D. Hensrud, MD, MPH, an associate professor of preventive medicine and nutrition at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota.

The stated goal of the Mayo Clinic Diet is to help clients and patients focus on creating a system of healthful habits that promote a healthful lifestyle. “We have partnered with Digital Wellness, a company with a lot of experience in weight management, to offer the Mayo Clinic Diet on a new platform,” Hensrud says.

Food Listed First on Online Menu More Likely to Be Ordered

In a new study from Flinders University in Australia, women who saw healthful food at the top of an online menu were 30% to 40% more likely to order it. According to the authors, menu placement could play a role in encouraging more healthful eating.

Published in the journal Appetite and led by Indah Gynell, a PhD candidate at Flinders’ College of Education, Psychology and Social Work, the team investigated where on a menu healthful items should be placed to best encourage people to choose them.

“Previous research has explored menu placement before, but the studies were inconsistent, with some finding placing food items at the top and bottom of a menu increased their popularity, while others suggested that the middle is best,” Gynell says. “In our study, we compared three locations on both printed and online menus, with online being an important addition in the age of food ordering platforms, such as Uber Eats, especially during the pandemic.”
