In this month’s E-News Exclusive, Today’s Dietitian (TD) interviews the brass of The Monday Campaigns, explains what the new guides contain and the role RDs have in spreading the message about Meatless Monday among clients and patients and the foodservice community.

After reading the article, visit TD’s website at www.TodaysDietitian.com to read the digital edition of the October issue, which includes articles on counseling vegan clients, A2 beta-casein in milk, nutrigenomics, and graphic design for improved patient care.

Implementing Meatless Monday in School
and University Foodservice Operations

By Hadley Turner

With government food, nutrition, and health programs constantly at risk of being cut from the federal budget, there’s never been a more important time for health initiatives and education to come from private organizations. The Monday Campaigns is a nonprofit organization behind a variety of health initiatives that encourage the public to reduce stress, move more, eat more healthfully, and quit smoking, but likely their best-known initiative is Meatless Monday, a campaign that encourages individuals to go meatless one day per week. But Meatless Monday isn’t confined to only the home dinner table; foodservice facilities such as schools and hospitals have implemented Meatless Monday programs as well.

This past spring, the Meatless Monday campaign released updated versions of their Meatless Monday Implementation Guides for K-12 schools and college and university foodservice programs. The guides provide full instructions and materials for foodservice professionals who want to begin and promote Meatless Monday programs at their schools.

Protein Supplement May Help Repair Muscles in Older Adults

Whey protein supplements aren’t just for gym buffs, according to new research from McMaster University. When taken on a regular basis, a combination of these and other ingredients in a ready-to-drink formula have been found to greatly improve the physical strength of a growing cohort: senior citizens.

The deterioration of muscle mass and strength that’s a normal part of aging—known as sarcopenia—can increase the risk of falls, metabolic disorders, and the need for assisted living, researchers say.

“Older people who do little to prevent the progression of sarcopenia drift toward a state where they find activities of daily living, like rising from a chair or ascending stairs, very difficult or maybe impossible,” says lead scientist Stuart Phillips, PhD, a professor in the department of kinesiology and member of McMaster’s Institute for Research on Aging.
